Responsible AI use begins with understanding what these tools actually are and what they are not.
Current AI systems do not think or understand in the way humans do, even when their outputs appear sophisticated. Most generative AI tools produce responses by predicting likely sequences of words or patterns based on training data. This is why AI can produce answers that sound authoritative but are not factually correct. There is no internal mechanism for checking whether a statement is true, which is why a system can generate a plausible sounding citation that does not exist, or state an outdated fact with complete confidence. Different tools may also produce different answers to the same question, reflecting differences in training data and model design rather than anything resembling judgment.
The most practical approach is to treat AI output as a starting point rather than a final answer, particularly for any claim involving a specific number, date, name, or source. These are the categories where AI errors are most common and least obvious.
Verify Important Information
AI-generated content should not be treated as automatically reliable. Citations can be fabricated, sources can be misattributed, and outdated information can be presented as current. When information matters, confirm it independently.
Before relying on AI-generated information it is worth checking important claims against credible sources, verifying statistics and quotations individually, confirming that cited sources actually exist and say what the AI claims they say, and looking for agreement across multiple independent sources.
Verification is especially important for topics involving health, finance, legal matters, or public safety.

Understand the Limits of AI Tools
AI systems are useful for a range of tasks including generating ideas or outlines, summarizing large amounts of information, explaining complex topics in plain language, and drafting content that will be reviewed and edited. They are not appropriate for every situation.
AI should not be relied on for medical advice or diagnosis, legal decisions or interpretation, financial planning, or safety-critical situations. In these contexts AI can play a supporting role, such as helping you prepare questions for a professional or understand basic terminology, but it should never replace qualified expertise or verified sources.

Be Transparent When Using AI
When AI tools assist with content creation, disclosing that use is good practice in academic, professional, or public-facing work. This includes noting when AI assisted with drafting or editing, identifying AI-generated images or media, and acknowledging AI use in research or writing.
In professional settings, AI use may also be subject to employer policy. Some organizations restrict AI use with confidential materials or client data even when tools appear secure. Recognize AI-Generated Media
AI systems can generate realistic images, audio, and video. These formats are no longer reliable proof that something actually happened or that a person said or did something. When evaluating media, check the original source before sharing or drawing conclusions, look for inconsistencies in lighting, audio sync, or movement that may indicate manipulation, question content that appears unusually dramatic or emotionally designed to provoke a reaction, and confirm whether credible independent sources report the same event.
A convincing image or recording is not sufficient evidence on its own.

Avoid Overreliance on AI
AI tools can assist with thinking, but they should not replace it. Overreliance can lead to accepting incorrect information without checking, weakening critical thinking and independent judgment, and sharing unverified content that turns out to be false.
Good practice includes reviewing AI-generated output carefully before using it, editing and refining responses rather than using them as-is, and applying your own reasoning before acting on AI suggestions. AI should support decisions, not make them.
Use Reputable AI Tools
Not all AI tools follow the same standards for privacy, transparency, or security. Before using an AI platform, consider whether it clearly explains how user data is handled and whether it is shared, whether your prompts are stored or used for training future models, and what the system is designed to do and what its known limitations are.
As a starting point, look for tools that publish a privacy policy, explain whether your inputs are used for training, and offer a way to delete your data. Using established tools with clear, readable policies reduces uncertainty and risk.
